Note: This issue had two covers, one of Chamber penciled by Ian Churchill, and one of Wolverine penciled by Barry Windsor Smith. I count Chamber as a guest star because Wolverine and Nightcrawler's discussion tells us that he has not yet joined the X-Men, having gone A.W.O.L. by not reporting to the Mansion after Generation X #75.
While exploring a mutant spike in London detected by Cerebra, Archangel, Iceman and Nightcrawler discover a large population of deformed mutants living in the sewers. Despite Nightcrawler helping in the birth of a baby, the sewer dwellers distrust the X-Men and attack them. The X-Men retreat, a battle not what they wanted. Soon after a man calling himself Mr Clean arrives and kills many of the mutants by setting them alight. Meanwhile, Jonathan Starsmore who was supposed to have come to the X-Mansion to join the X-Men, has instead returned to London. When he saves a popstar named Sugar Kane from obsessive fans, the singer becomes infatuated with him.
